Improving the reliability of the California grid
Caballero is a 100 megawatt (MW) / 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Nipomo, California that stores and dispatches energy to the California grid.
Fengate and Alpha Omega Power (AOP) acquired the in-construction project in 2024, managed construction completion, and have been operating the facility since February 2025. Fengate partnered with AOP in 2023 to establish a new platform to develop, build, own and operate utility-scale battery energy storage projects with long-term offtake agreements in the three largest battery storage markets in the United States.
Caballero provides enough clean energy to power more than 100,000 homes for up to four hours daily during peak electricity demand periods. With power available on-demand, the facility improves the reliability of the local San Luis Obispo County grid and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market.
Caballero BESS started construction in 2024 and achieved full commercial operations in 2025.
