Fengate-led consortium shortlisted for University of Florida Central Energy Plant Project

January 19, 2022

The University of Florida has identified Swamp Power Partners, a consortium comprising Fengate, Bond Building Construction, Vicinity Energy and Vanderweil, as one of four shortlisted teams for its Central Energy Plant Project.

With an estimated US$300 million capex, the visionary public-private partnership (P3) project involves the design, build, financing, operations, and maintenance of a central energy plant which will provide steam, chilled water, and electricity at the University’s main Gainesville campus in northern Florida. The project also includes the construction and financing of a new thermal piping distribution loop in the University’s South District.

The University’s education, research, and business-related functions all rely on a complex arrangement of energy generation, chillers, boilers, and distribution. Chilled water and steam production are critical to campus operations — these products are supplied to campus buildings for the purposes of air conditioning, heating, humidity control, and process related needs. Further, the University’s research facilities often require narrow climate control tolerances necessitating robust production and distribution systems.

It is anticipated this important P3 project and highly efficient solution will provide as much as:

  • $2.8 million/year in chilled water utility savings
  • $13.2 million/year in combined heat and power utility savings
  • 80,000 ton/year in CO2 reduction
  • 25% total campus greenhouse gas reduction
